The beer industry in Romania is one of the most dynamic branches of the food sector, with a significant impact on the local economy. At this time, beer is produced in 31 counties, with an annual contribution of over 3 billion euros to GDP and with more than 60,000 jobs supported directly and indirectly. Approximately 97% of the beer consumed in Romania is produced locally, and the market stabilized in 2024 at a volume of 15 million hectoliters, after three consecutive years of decline.
In this context, fiscal predictability and operational efficiency are essential to support investments, competitiveness and long-term development. For beer producers, from large industrial units to craft breweries, technology becomes the real differentiator: higher yield, reduced losses, consistent quality and optimized operating costs.
Through our partnership with Flottweg, we provide separation and recovery solutions that respond concretely to these challenges.
Beer clarification and process stability
- Flottweg separators ensure pre-filtration, clarification and precise turbidity adjustment for all types of beer (lager, hazy, weissbier, etc.). By reducing filter load and lowering diatomite consumption, filtration life increases and costs decrease.
- Turbidity adjustment for special types of beer (weiss, haze): separators stabilize yeast variations, maintaining the desired sensory profile from batch to batch. Technologies such as SoftShot® FLEX and Brewer Control allow silent operation, efficient solids separation and full automation of the process, with recipes and parameters adapted to each beer style.
Beer recovery
- Flottweg decanters for the hot process area recover up to 75% of the wort lost in the hot trub, reintroducing it under pressure into the process. Thus, the amount of wort lost will be much smaller, process times shorter, and the cost/hl will decrease.
- Decanters for dry hopping – separate used hops with up to 99% particle retention and recover up to ~97% of the associated beer volume – less effluent, lower load on separators/filters and reduced OPEX. The beer is discharged under pressure and protected through CO₂ blanketing, avoiding oxidation.
- Sedicanter® for surplus yeast – recovers beer with gentle handling, generates yeast cakes with high dry matter and opens opportunities to use yeast as a food ingredient or feed.
Valorization of beer by-products
- Brewer’s spent grains are dewatered up to 40% dry matter with the help of Flottweg decanters and belt presses. Thus, you will obtain lower transport costs and open the opportunity to transform spent grains into feed or higher added-value products.
- Effluents and sludges are significantly reduced through product recovery, which lowers the load on wastewater treatment plants and contributes to the improvement of environmental indicators (CO₂, COD/BOD).
Integration, hygiene and availability in the beer sector
All equipment is designed according to strict hygiene standards in the field (integrated CIP, food-grade materials), and optimized for continuous operation and easy maintenance (quick access to components, LongLife concept with wear protection). The systems connect naturally to SCADA/BMS, with monitoring of recipes, turbidity and yields at each process step.
How do we help the breweries in Romania?
- Process audit (cold/hot), mass balance on losses, yield/OPEX KPIs.
- Selection / sizing of equipment (separator, decanter, Sedicanter®, belt press) and automation integration.
- Installation, commissioning, training and local service (spare parts, interventions, preventive maintenance).
- Rapid integration: plug & play solutions for craft or turnkey projects for large factories.
- Pilot testing where necessary (validation of yields and quality).
If you operate a brewery, craft or industrial and want to increase yield, reduce losses and stabilize product quality, we can provide you with a phased plan with clear indicators and measurable results. Contact us for a free audit.
